The delta variant, which is already causing stricter Corona measures again in many countries, is also spreading in Austria. As many as 361 cases of the more contagious variant have already been detected in Austria. A week ago, there had been only 71 cases.
Austria-wide, 117 new infections with SARS-CoV-2 were also reported on Wednesday. This is below the average of the past seven days, where 120 new cases were added daily. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population continued to decline and now stands at 9.5 cases. In addition, two more deaths were registered again, the Interior and Health Ministries reported Wednesday. More than seven million vaccinations have been administered across Austria since vaccination began.
On Tuesday, 83,988 vaccinations were administered. A total of 4,515,964 people have already received at least one partial vaccination, according to the E-vaccination passport data: That’s 50.7 percent of the population. 2,587,110, or 29.1 percent of Austrians, are already fully immunized. Exactly 7,008,164 vaccinations have been administered since the campaign started about six months ago.
2400 active cases
As of Wednesday, there were 2,419 active cases in Austria, 102 fewer than on Tuesday. Since the start of the pandemic, 649,845 people have already tested positive for the coronavirus. A total of 636,740 people are considered recovered. The most new infections reported on Wednesday Vienna with 62, in Upper Austria it was 24, in Lower Austria 18 and in Styria ten. The other provinces recorded fewer than ten new cases. However, there was again a data adjustment, so Carinthia reported minus 18 cases.
Two deaths were reported since Tuesday, in the past week it was a total of 15. Thus, since the beginning of the pandemic already 10,686 people have died from the consequences of infection. Per 100,000 population, that’s already 120.1 Covid-19 deaths.
69 people in intensive care units
In hospital, 236 infected people had to be treated on Wednesday, eight fewer than on Tuesday. Intensive care units cared for 69 people, seven fewer than the previous day. Within a week, the number of seriously ill patients has decreased by 23. The most intensive care patients were still in Vienna with 28, in Salzburg and Styria no more patients needed intensive care on Wednesday.
In the past 24 hours, 496,020 PCR and antigen rapid tests were registered throughout Austria. Of these, 107,679 were conclusive PCR tests, and the positive rate was 0.1 percent.
Lower Austria recorded the highest initial vaccination coverage rate at 56.4 percent. In Burgenland, 54.5 percent of the population has been vaccinated at least once, and in Vorarlberg 51.1 percent. After Tyrol (51), Carinthia (50.1), Salzburg (49.7), Styria (49.5) and Upper Austria (47.6), Vienna brings up the rear with a vaccination coverage rate of 46.1 percent.
